Courageous Rail Staff Member Receives Severe Injuries During Mass Knife Incident on High-Speed Service

A courageous railway employee who stepped in to protect passengers during a mass knife attack on a high-speed train has sustained life-threatening wounds, police confirmed on Sunday.

Details of the Frightening Event

Surveillance video reportedly depicts the staff member attempting to stop the assailant as the train journeyed between a city and Huntingdon in the county. Bystanders recounted a frightening 14-minute duration after the train left Peterborough, with injured passengers fleeing through compartments.

The individual, a 32-year-old citizen from Peterborough, remains in custody for interrogation. Authorities announced a major event on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in central London.

Crisis Response and Consequences

The incident on Saturday night resulted in 11 people being cared for in hospital after the train made an unscheduled stop at the station in Huntingdon. Several individuals have now been released from medical care.

A bystander recorded the individual brandishing a large knife and being shot with a stun device as he faced police on the station. He was allegedly heard shouting, "End my life, end my life."

“This was a horrific attack that has had a wide impact. Our sympathies go out to the injured and their loved ones – particularly the courageous member of train personnel whose family are being assisted by trained officers,” said a high-ranking police officer.

Labor Reaction and Calls for Measures

Train unions were quick to commend staff and call for more action. A union leader said he would be “seeking urgent meetings with authorities, rail employers and law enforcement to guarantee that we have the best possible support, resources and effective procedures in operation”.

A different union leader urged the train operator and government “to act quickly to examine safety, to support the impacted employees, and to make sure nothing like this occurs again”.

Operator Commended for Rapid Thinking

The operator who halted the train at Huntingdon was described as being “deeply affected” but “well”, and has been praised by union officials for doing “precisely what was needed”.

“He did not halt the train in the middle of two stops where it’s clearly difficult for the first responders to reach, but he carried on going until he arrived to Huntingdon, where the response was pretty much already there,” explained a association representative.

Additional Details

Authorities stated they got the initial distress reports at 7:39 pm, and the service was forced to make an unscheduled stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.

One observer recounted initially thinking if the situation was a Halloween prank, but quickly realized from people's expressions that it was serious.

Authorities have stated there is nothing to indicate the incident was a terrorist attack and have asked the public to provide with any additional information.

Train operations on the affected line are expected to have disruption until Monday, with travelers recommended to postpone their journeys where feasible.

Anyone with details that could help the inquiry are encouraged to reach authorities by sending a message a designated number with a case code.
